By Vilma Ruddock, M.D.
I wrote Jamaican Genealogy Research: A Practical Guide to the Best Resources for Tracing Your Ancestry as a tribute to my maternal grandmother.
It was also a “labor of love” for my global online Jamaican genealogy community and other family historians.
The Origins of the Book
My Jamaican genealogy research book evolved from a simple but loving gift from my maternal grandmother. Just before her passing, she gave me a handwritten list of four generations of our ancestors.
My grandmother knew I had harboured a deep desire to uncover our family history since childhood. Jamaica’s history and its multi-ethnic heritage and culture also intrigued me.
Growing up, I knew only a handful of my relatives. Many had emigrated to the UK and the US before I was born. Others lived in distant places in Jamaica. My grandmother’s list re-ignited my lifelong interest in our family history. It also propelled me later to begin researching my Jamaican ancestry in earnest.
The Research
I spent over 20 years navigating the challenges of Jamaican genealogy research. Jamaica’s historical records were not easy to access in the pre-Internet era. Many related documents were also scattered in archives and libraries in the UK, the US, and elsewhere.
Over the years, a wealth of genealogical records appeared online. I saw a growing worldwide interest among Jamaican family historians. Yet many struggled with how to access the historical documents and how to start their family research.
As my knowledge of resources and methods grew, I began sharing my insights in Jamaican genealogy online groups. I also answered questions on forums across various genealogy websites.
The Compilation of Resources
I wrote Jamaican Genealogy Research: A Practical Guide to the Best Resources for Tracing Your Ancestry to make the information I and others were compiling more accessible worldwide.
Our “library” of resources was growing in the community of online genealogy groups I manage. However, it became increasingly clear that the information was not easy to access or navigate in the social media platforms’ controlled structures. So, I decided to compile all the resources in an accessible book to ease the ongoing frustrations and challenges of Jamaican family research.
The Book’s Purpose
This comprehensive handbook fills a long-standing gap for our global Jamaican genealogy research community and others. It is a practical guide and reference that provides detailed information on:
- all the registries, archives, and libraries that house Jamaican historical records
- genealogy websites and online databases
- alternate sources of information such as books, journals, periodicals, and other writings
- invaluable expert genealogy research methods, tools, tips, and insights
This book will serve beginners and experienced researchers alike. Non-Jamaican family historians can also benefit from the general genealogy research advice included.
Genealogy and History
Historical context matters in genealogy research. Jamaican Genealogy Research: A Practical Guide to the Best Resources for Tracing Your Ancestry is part genealogy, and part Jamaican and relevant global history.
The longest chapter in the book is an overview of the island’s global ancestral origins. It includes the migrations, struggles, and historical forces that shaped Jamaica and our ancestors’ lives. History also runs through the other chapters of the book.
Master Your Research
This practical guide is more than a collection of resources. It is designed to help readers master Jamaican genealogy. You will learn how to navigate the most relevant archives, genealogy websites, and record collections. It also equips you with strategies to overcome the unique challenges of Jamaican ancestry research.
Preserving a Family Legacy
My primary goal in writing this book was to compile the resources that will help Jamaican family historians:
- Find their ancestors’ historical records
- build their family trees
- break through their brick walls.
My secondary goal is to encourage others to document their stories and research and preserve their family’s legacy for future generations.
A Rewarding Journey
Writing this book was a deeply personal and rewarding journey. I hope it inspires and empowers others to explore their ancestral origins while immersing themselves in Jamaica’s captivating, multi-ethnic history and culture.
